Kathy Scott-Gurnell, M.D. (Dr. KSG) is a Native Houstonian and product of HISD.  She served her community as a mental health provider since 1994.  She received two undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Science from The University of Texas in Austin (1983) and a Bachelor of Arts from the College of Biblical Studies (2007).  In addition, she obtained a Master’s degree from Texas Southern University (1985) and her Medical degree from University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (1990).   Dr. KSG is licensed in the state of California and Texas and is board certified in both Adult and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry.  Dr. KSG retired her Private Practice in downtown Houston in 2007 and continued as a faculty at  University of Texas Health @ Houston, where she served a total of 15 years.  Her clinical experience has been vast, including clinical and administrative psychiatric services.  Dr. KSG has published in academic journals and textbook with her research focus in Childhood Bipolar Disorder.  Dr. KSG has presented locally, nationally and internationally. She served as a voluntary faculty for the Department of Psychiatry at Meharry Medical College in Nashville Tennessee from 2014 through 2015. Dr KSG transitioned to administrative medicine  in 2011 and recently joined Texas Children’s Health Plan as their first full time Behavioral Medical Director.  

Personally, Dr. KSG is happily married 37 years and the proud mother of three young adults.  Her son, Braylon, his wife Krystal as well as her daughter Kassie are all Air Force Academy graduates and rank as Majors in the US Air Force.  Her son Rion (Caleah) is a recent graduate of Baylor Law school.  Her family refers to themselves as the “athletic nerds” as they all are former scholar athletes.

Dr. KSG attends The Fort Bend Church with her husband Morris Gurnell who serves as  Minister of Education under the leadership of Pastor Byron Stevenson.  

Dr. KSG is an Active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and serves in  her local chapter, Mu Kappa Omega.  Dr. KSG is a strong advocate for 3 non profits: SuperGirl Shine, (Stem program for girls); Fresh Spirit Wellness (Board member) - rehabilitation for abused women and Mirror Images Texas (Founding Board member)– which offers retreats for healing and spiritual growth for those who have been abused, neglected or disenfranchised.  

Dr. Scott-Gurnell enjoys reading and writing. She released her first self-help book, The Economics of Parenting, HIS Gift, Your giving and HIS Increase, in September, 2019. Dr. KSG is diligently working on her second book to offer an approach for grieving with hope, releasing late 2024. 

 

This book is written by a medical doctor, mother, and Christian sharing her method of combining all her experiences to maximize the returns of utilizing biblical practices in child rearing. The revelations she gained through this writing exercise add a dose of reality to how God works everything out for our good.
